The wooden cabin is light, airy and has underfloor heating. There is a large area for coats, boots and outdoor gear and every child has their own named peg with plenty of space to get changed for outdoor play, whatever the weather.
There is are purpose-built toilets, together with a hand washing and nappy changing area, allowing the children freedom and privacy to access these when needed, gaining independence while having the support and supervision of staff.
We have a fully equipped kitchen in the playroom which enables staff to see and talk to children while in the kitchen. The children take part in regular cooking activities, including baking for birthdays and snack. We hope to return to Bake and Share Lunches very soon which were put on hold during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Children have access to painting and drawing resources, playdough, crafting materials, books and stories, home corner, construction, puzzles, small world and table-top games. There are opportunities to handle and use real objects such as scales and weights and to sew and do woodwork.
The cabin opens out to a timber-decked verandah and a large grassed garden that is accessible at all times. The garden has raised beds where we grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. There is a large sandpit with permanent shade canopy, a wooden playhouse, boat, willow den, wooden den, a large mud kitchen and a paved level area for the children to ride trikes and scooters. There is space to explore and investigate as well as quiet nooks to sit and chat with friends.
The pre-school has developed a corner of the school field into a Forest School area with logs, fire pit, muddy mound, bug hotel, herb bed and storage. In the spring of 2021 a sapling was planted for every child due to start school in September 2021. We have a rope swing, 'pop-up' mud kitchen, slack line, mallets and pegs, wheelbarrows, ropes and investigating kit.
We use the school field for walks, running, ball skills and parachute play.
